5 Ways To Prevent Construction Accidents This Summer

Summer is construction season in Illinois, and we are right in the middle of it. While most people in Peoria and the surrounding areas treat construction zones as annoyances to be passed as quickly as possible, it is important to keep in mind that they are workplaces for many people.

Construction workers face a more dangerous work environment than most people in Illinois. They work with heavy machinery and hazardous materials in the hot summer months. On top of that, motorists that fail to take safety precautions pose additional risk of injury. As motorists, however, there are a few things that we can do to help limit the risks that construction workers in our state face.

  1. Slow down. This is the easiest way to protect workers. By driving the posted speed limit for a construction zone, you ensure that you are able to stop quickly if necessary and maintain control of your vehicle as traffic patterns shifts.
  2. Pay attention. Being aware of your surroundings in a construction zone will help you and others stay safe.
  3. Avoid tailgating. Maintaining a safe distance from the car in front of you can help prevent rear-end collisions when traffic stops quickly.
  4. Put down your phone. Not only is it illegal in Illinois to use a hand-held phone while driving, but it is also dangerous. Texting or talking on the phone can divert your attention from the road and potentially lead to an accident.
  5. Watch out for workers. Construction workers face serious hazards on a daily basis. Being aware of where they are and doing your best to keep a safe distance is important for protecting them from injury. It may also help to remember that hitting a worker carries fines ranging from $375 to $10,000.

These five precautions are not difficult to take, but they can make all the difference in keeping workers in our state safe. If we all make an effort to stay safe in construction zone, we could help prevent serious injuries or even death from occurring.
