Illinois lineman loses hands after touching live wire

Last month, as linemen with a Southern Illinois power company repaired power lines that had been damaged in recent storms, an 18-year-old veteran of the crew was catastrophically injured after coming into contact with a live wire.

The 7,200-volt power transmission line caused such serious injuries that doctors were not able to save the worker's hands, which had to be amputated between his wrists and elbows. The worker's wife told a local news crew that her husband still had at least one operation ahead of him as well as skin grafting.

The 51-year-old worker had been with Wayne-White Counties Electric Cooperative for nearly 20 years. At the time of the news report, investigators were unsure of the accident's cause.

Linemen perform extremely risky work nearly every day on the job, and accidents are sometimes unavoidable, even when workers use all necessary safety precautions. For this reason, workers' compensation benefits serve as an important life-line.

Workers' compensation benefits are available to workers who are injured on the job, and they apply even if the worker was at fault for the accident. The benefits may cover past and future medical expenses, lost wages, training for future employment and more.

The only problem is that the workers' compensation system can be difficult to navigate, and sometimes workers are denied benefits that they truly deserve. Working with an experienced attorney who is familiar with the workers' comp system can help avoid this.

Linemen and other workers who put their lives "on the line" while performing their job duties need and deserve to have workers' compensation benefits readily available to them. Unfortunately, this isn't the reality. Strong Law is a firm that fights on behalf of injured workers and their rights.
