Trucking industry lobbying to get safety rules repealed

Illinois motorists might be interested in learning that Republican lawmakers in Congress have for now blocked trucking safety regulations that were meant to keep fatigued truck drivers off of the road. The American Trucking Association indicated that it will return to lobby when the Republicans are in control of the legislative and executive branches of the federal government in order to try to get additional safety regulations repealed, blocked or rolled back.

The Amercian Trucking Association wants Congress to block state laws that require that truck drivers take more breaks beyond what is federally mandated. The National Transportation Safety Board states that it is is concerned that the government may complete a wide-scale rollback of safety rules when the Democrats are no longer control the executive branch.

Safety experts indicate that they believe segments of the trucking industry will push to increase the weight limits for loads above 90,000 pounds. They also believe that the trucking industry may try to get an increase of the length of trailers from 28 to 33 feet for double-trailer combinations. Another rule that was suspended was one that prevents truck drivers from working longer than 75 hours in a week before taking a 35-hour break. The portion that was suspended mandates that truck drivers have between 1 and 5 a.m. off during that 35-hour period.

A tractor-trailer crash is often catastrophic or deadly to occupants of other vehicles. Truck driver fatigue is one of the leading causes of these types of accidents, and an injured victim might want to meet with an attorney to see if the trucking company can be held financially responsible in addition to the negligent driver.
