International Roadcheck emphasizes load securement in 2017

Before International Roadcheck draws to a close on June 8, Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance enforcement inspectors are expected to have checked an average of 15 commercial vehicles per minute over a 72-hour span for possible safety violations. The inspection event takes place each year on roadways in Illinois and throughout the United States and Canada. In 2016, 9,080 trucks and 1,436 drivers were placed out of service during the CVSA inspection.

While the event affords the CVSA the opportunity to conduct comprehensive compliance, enforcement, and educational initiatives, the association identifies a different area of emphasis each year. Cargo securement is the focus of the 2017 event, and it is anticipated that special emphasis on this area will serve as a reminder to carriers and drivers of its ultimate importance.

Among other violations, inspectors are looking for those that are related to cargo securement, including cargo that moves around or falls out of the truck. Before drivers take to the roadway, the CVSA says that equipment and loads should be properly secured and that tie-downs should be in good condition.

The number of commercial vehicles placed out of service during the 2017 International Roadcheck campaign is not yet known. However, when a cargo securement violation or other negligence on the part of a truck driver or carrier results in a trucking accident, people in other vehicles who are injured may want to meet with an attorney to discuss their situation. In some cases, the filing of a personal injury lawsuit seeking compensation from the at-fault party or parties might be appropriate.
