Industries with high rates of work injuries

According to a report issued by the Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2015 almost 3 million individuals sustained nonfatal workplace illnesses or injuries that were reported by an employer. Over half of them had to take time off, be transferred to another job or had restricted work duties. Illinois employees may want to know the five industries in which workers are most likely to incur an injury.

Included in the list of injury-prone industries was air transportation. This industry, which had an injury rate of 5.8 injuries for every 100 workers in 2015, consists of helicopter and aircraft flights and employs mechanics, cargo and freight agents and pilots.

The wood product manufacturing industry is described by the BLS as businesses geared toward shaping, sawing, laminating, assembling and planing logs to create wooden products. For every 100 workers, 5.9 suffered some form of injury.

Individuals who work in the courier and messaging industry are in an occupation that had the third highest rate of workplace injuries and illnesses, totaling 6.4 injuries per 100 workers. The nursing and residential care facility industry had 6.5 injuries per 100 full-time workers. Facilities that were operated by state and local governments reported 11.7 incidences for each 100 workers. The industry with the highest rate of workplace injuries was animal production. Employers reported 6.6 injuries per 100 workers.

Regardless of their occupation, people who are injured in a workplace accident may be eligible to file a claim for workers' compensation benefits. An attorney can often assist a worker in preparing the required claim and in helping to ensure that it is filed in a timely manner.
