The CVSA brake inspection event

Illinois drivers who are concerned about road safety may be interested to learn that over 9,500 inspections took place during Brake Safety Day in North America. Almost 2,000 trucks were placed out of commission due to violations during the unannounced event.

During the one-day inspection blitz, which was sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance , 9,524 inspections were conducted in 33 U.S. states as well as 10 provinces in Canada. The number of trucks that were classified as out-of-service totaled 1,989, with 1,146 of the vehicles sidelined for violations related to brakes. Violations related to brakes account for the biggest percentage of out-of-service violations during roadside inspections.

According to the CVSA, the intent of the event was to perform roadside inspections and remove from the road any commercial trucks that have serious brake violations. The alliance also stated that it wanted to assess whether antilock braking systems are being properly maintained.

During Brake Safety Day, there were 4,635 trucks that were determined to be required by law to have antilock braking systems. Out of those vehicles, 391, or 8 percent, were found to have ABS violations. The CVSA is planning to have another Brake Safety Day that will take place on September 7, 2017.

Individuals who are injured in accidents involving commercial trucks should speak with personal injury attorneys about their legal options. There are a number of factors that can contribute to truck accidents, and the attorney may advise of whether financial compensation could be pursued. Lawsuits may be filed against the parties whose negligent behavior resulted in a jackknife accident, a tractor-trailer crash or a multi-vehicle crash. Drivers may be held liable for driving while drunk, drowsy or distracted. Truck carriers and manufacturers could also be held liable.
