3 tips for dealing with memory loss after a crash

A crash is hard enough when you have broken bones or soft injuries, but when it causes brain damage that makes it hard to remember who you are, where you are, what you love to do or even what you did this morning, it's devastating. Memory loss is, unfortunately, a side effect of some types of brain injuries.

For some people, memory loss resolves over time as the brain heals and reroutes information. For others, they're never quite the same. Here are a few tips for dealing with your injury.

  • Use reminders

Whether it's a Google calendar or you have a notebook that you write in, having reminders is a good way to stay on track after a brain injury. As soon as you complete something you put in as a reminder, you can check it off or cross it out. That way, even if you forget if you did it, you can refer back to the notebook or phone to remind you.

  • Get professional help

After a serious brain injury, it's normal to need some assistance. Maybe that assistance comes in the form of a personal assistant, or maybe it's a medical provider who gives you daily memory techniques to practice. Whatever you do, don't avoid seeking the help you need. Even if it's just a person who calls to remind you to eat a few times a day, it's better than struggling to remember.

  • Relax

Even though it's hard to deal with memory loss, stress is only likely to make it worse. Try to relax and calm your mind. Over time, your brain will heal, at least to a degree. What you're dealing with today may not be how you are in the future. Do your best to reduce your stress and take this injury in stride.
