Use care when walking on ice and snow this winter

Walking around during the winter months in Illinois can be difficult. You have to deal with snowy conditions that can make it easy to slip and fall. While sidewalks and paths are usually shoveled and salted, it is necessary to ensure that you are prepared for walking around in wintry weather, even if you are only going from your vehicle into a store.

Before you leave home, make sure you have on the right shoes. Wearing flat shoes that have some sort of grip can help. Some people need heels for work or social events. If this is the case, bring them with you, but don't try to walk on a snowy or icy surface with them.

You have to be sure that you aren't trying to rush when you're on slippery surfaces. Walking slowly and taking small steps can help you to keep your footing. As you are walking, pay attention to your body mechanics. You may find leaning forward slightly helps you to keep your footing.

If you do happen to fall, try to resist the urge to catch yourself with your hands. There is a chance that you could break your wrist or arm if your body weight is placed on that single limb when you fall. Instead, try to fall on your thigh, then hip, then side, then shoulder. This distributes your weight as you fall, which can minimize the risk of injury.

Accidents that happen on the snow and ice might be due to the negligence of the property owner or renter. You may have the option of seeking compensation if you suffer an injury in a slip-and-fall accident this winter.
