Crash on icy Illinois highway leaves 1 dead, 3 injured

A multi-vehicle crash on the Bishop Ford Freeway near South Holland, Illinois, left one man dead and three people injured recently.

The incident occurred on Interstate 94 near 173rd Street, the Illinois State Police reported.

It began when a 51-year-old man, traveling southbound in a 2000 Chevrolet, hit a patch of ice and lost control. He wound up on the right side of the roadway, and he and his passenger got out of the Chevrolet.

Then, a Chicago woman, 46, also skidded on ice in her 2004 Jeep, hit the concrete median and also stopped on the right shoulder. The passenger from the Chevrolet helped the Jeep's driver exit her vehicle.

The two drivers and the Chevrolet passenger were on the right side of the road, but state police said the male driver began to walk on the right shoulder.

At that point, a 2007 Chevrolet also headed south approached. That driver, a 64-year-old man from Chicago, lost control, crashed into the median as the other cars had and ricocheted to the side. The man who was walking on the shoulder was knocked off the overpass and fell to his death.

An autopsy found the man died of blunt force trauma that was caused by being hit by the car.

Two other drivers also spun out on the ice and hit the other disabled cars. In all, three drivers were taken to the hospital for treatment of unknown injuries.

This accident will be a lot for police to sort out, but one thing is certain. Ice or no ice, all drivers are responsible for keeping their cars under control at all times. The family of the man who was killed in this unfortunate accident – as well as the injured drivers – should consult with a personal injury attorney.
