The physical and financial cost of car accidents in Illinois

The losses because of car accidents in Illinois and the rest of the United States are immense. According to the Washington, D.C.-based Association for Safe International Road Travel (ASIRT), more than 37,000 people in the U.S. die in car accidents each year, with more than 1,600 kids under age 15 getting killed. An additional 2.35 million people get injured or become disabled from collisions.

Financially, vehicle crashes result in about $231 billion in losses each year, averaging $820 per person.

Much of those costs are the result of hospital bills, rehabilitation and other injury-related expenses.

What kind of injuries are typical in an accident?

  • Head injuries. These often are the most severe injuries that result from a crash. Both drivers and passengers can hit their heads against the dashboard or other hard objects, resulting in traumatic brain injuries (TBI) that can cause lasting problems. TBIs often are require long-term medical treatment.
  • Back injuries, especially to the spinal cord. Any injury to the spinal cord can damage nerves, and in severe incidents, patients can be paralyzed. Less severe is a herniated disk, but it still can cause significant effects, such as muscle weakness.
  • Neck injuries. Whiplash results from sudden movements of the head and neck.
  • Chest injuries. Blunt-force trauma can cause broken ribs and collapsed lungs, or even internal bleeding. Traumatic cardiac arrest can occur in people who have pre-existing heart problems.
  • Fractures. Broken bones and other injuries frequently occur in the legs, arms, hands and feet.
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Emotional issues can also result.

Car crashes often are avoidable incidents that can turn tragic. If you or a family member have been injured, an attorney can review your case with you to see how you can recover expenses resulting from your injuries. An attorney can evaluate your case and help you pursue a claim for damages to recover money for the expenses attributed to treatment of your injuries.
