Illinois woman killed when Uber car hit by alleged drunk driver

A man has been arrested on numerous charges in Will County, Illinois, after a 23-year-old woman died while trapped inside a burning Uber car.

The woman was riding in the Uber car, which was a Hyundai sedan, on the Stevenson Expressway when an Infiniti being driven by a 22-year-old man crashed into the Hyundai.

The Uber driver was transporting three friends, celebrating the woman's 23rd birthday. The Hyundai exploded into flames when it was hit.

The Infiniti driver, of Homer Glen, lllinois, fled in another ride-sharing car, and police were waiting for him at his home when he was dropped off. He has been charged with reckless homicide, aggravated driving under the influence, failure to report an accident causing injury, failure to report an accident causing death, and other violations, authorities said.

The suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries, and blood drawn there showed his blood-alcohol content was close to three times to legal limit, authorities said.

The man was ordered to be held on $100,000 bond. If he is able to make bond, he will be on electronic monitors when released. Despite his young age, he has a number of infractions on his driving record, including being involved in a crash with injury.

A man who was riding in the Uber pulled the driver and a friend from the burning car. He told the female victim's mother that he was unable to reach her daughter.

"He was a hero and I don't want him to ever feel bad that he couldn't save her, but I know he does," the mother told the Chicago Tribune.

The woman will be forever impacted by the loss of her daughter. The other passengers and the Uber driver will need time to recover from both their physical and emotional injuries. When they are able to do so, they should contact an attorney to discuss the next step.
