Yaz Defect Lawyers In Illinois
The drugs drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol have been marketed under the names Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella as birth control pills for women. Yaz is supposed to prevent ovulation, and cause subtle changes to a female’s cervical and uterine lining, making it more difficult for sperm to reach the uterus and fertilize an egg, and then more difficult for the egg to attach to the uterus. It has also been commonly prescribed to treat moderate acne in women.
Unfortunately, Yaz has done more than prevent pregnancy and acne; it has also caused thousands of serious complications and side effects, from life-threatening blood clots to heart attacks. If you or a loved one has been injured by Yaz, Yasmin or Ocella, call 309-565-8191 for a free consultation with one of our lawyers.
Yaz has been linked to a significantly increased risk of:
- Heart attack
- Blood clots in the legs (deep vein thrombosis)
- Blood clots and blockage in the lungs (pulmonary embolism)
- Gallbladder disease
Because of these serious side effects, the FDA voted, in December of 2008, to require that Yaz have a “black box” warning apparent on all packaging. This warning signals that the drug carries significant risks.
Lawsuits Against Yaz
Yaz has drawn a flood of lawsuits against its manufacturers, Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Barr Laboratories, Inc., Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc, and Barr Pharmaceuticals, LLC.
The lawsuits allege that Yaz was marketed and advertised in a way that misled consumers about the benefits of taking Yaz, and that its manufacturers downplayed and/or failed to warn of the serious side-effects and dangers associated with taking the dangerous drug. Studies cited by plaintiffs in Yaz litigation suggest that Yaz users had twice the risk of serious blood clots as other women who were using other contraceptives.
At present, numerous lawsuits have already been filed by patients and/or their representatives, and the cases have been consolidated into Multidistrict Litigation (MDL). Specifically, the Yaz and Yasmin MDL is currently pending before the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois. Bayer and its affiliates have already settled thousands of cases, and it is expected that there are thousands more still pending.
