“Low T” – The Fictitious Epidemic

Any person who has tuned in to watch any televised sporting event cannot help but notice the saturation marketing campaign that has been undertaken by drug companies regarding “Low T”, or low testosterone. The marketing and advertising campaign purporting to raise “disease awareness” has resulted in sales of over a billion dollars for Big Pharma. Big Pharma in its efforts to market AndroGel® and other similar products as a testosterone replacement therapy, has gone to great lengths to invent an epidemic where none existed.

The coordinated marketing campaigns are designed in a way to convince men that they are suffering from low testosterone levels. The advertising relates and suggests that various symptoms are associated with low testosterone. These so-called “symptoms” include listlessness, increased body fat, fatigue, irritability, and moodiness. In reality, these symptoms are merely general symptoms associated with aging, weight gain, and/or lifestyle rather than low testosterone. In fact, the Journal of American Medical Association published a study in 2013 that indicated that as many as 1/3 of men who had been prescribed testosterone did not even have low levels of testosterone when tested.

The problem you may ask? It is now being alleged that the use of AndroGel® and similar testosterone replacement products have been linked to exceedingly high risk of cardiac events, such as heart attack, and thrombolytic (stroke) events. In fact, a 2010 New England Journal of Medicine study had to be discontinued after an exceedingly high number of men in the study suffered cardiac and/or stroke events. In November 2013 the Journal of American Medical Association indicated that the use of testosterone replacement therapy products raised the risk of death, heart attack, and/or strike by approximately 30%!!

AndroGel® and other similar products act to increase hematocrit levels, thereby causing thickening of the blood. If this effect is not monitored and controlled properly, it can lead to life-threatening cardiac and cerebrovascular events, including heart attack and stroke.
