Sylvia has dedicated her carrier to helping those who have been taken advantage of by large institutions. After graduating from the University of Chicago Law School, Sylvia worked as a Federal Attorney for the United States Department of Education where she investigated deceptive admissions practices at various proprietary educational institutions andadjudicated borrower defense claimsresultingin over $4 billion dollarsof recovery for defrauded students.Prior to joining the Department as an attorney, she spent her 2L summer with them in Washington D.C. investigating fraudulent lending practices at post-secondary institutions and reviewingagency renewal petitions) to determine if agencies demonstrated a sufficient Federal Link to obtain accreditation and participate in non-HEA Federal programs as required by the Secretary.She alsoconducted full foreign medical education reviews for Canadaand Grenada analyzing the standards utilized by both countriesto accredit medical institutions and determined whether theymet the Department’s accreditation standards.
After her own step father suffered from over 20 heart attacks and was given less than a 3% chance of survival due to the negligence of various physicians and hospitals, Sylvia focused her attention to helping those who have been hurt. She now devotes her entire career to helping injured workers and people get access to needed medical care and the rights that are afforded to them under the law.
