Pradaxa Attorneys in Illinois

In October 2010, the FDA approved the use of the drug Pradaxa as a prescription anti-coagulant (anti-clotting) to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with a certain type of heart rhythm disorder. Anti-coagulants, like Pradaxa, have the side effect of making it easier for the patient to bleed, even from a minor injury such as a fall, or bump. Pradaxa use has been linked to the death of at least 500 users from bleeding. In fact, Pradaxa led the nation in reported deaths recently.

The Dangers of Pradaxa

Pradaxa is manufactured by a German company, Boehringer Ingelheim, one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. Studies of the drug have linked Pradaxa to significant increases of heart attacks, and irreversible and uncontrollable bleeding complications. The Pradaxa lawsuits allege that the manufacturer failed to adequately warn of the significant risk of internal bleeding, and failed to advise physicians how to treat bleeds when they develop.

In some of the worst cases, minor falls at home have led to fatal brain bleeds for some Pradaxa users. One of the problems identified with the use of Pradaxa is that traditional treatments used to stop excessive bleeds due to other anti-coagulants, like a dose of Vitamin K, do not work on Pradaxa users. In many cases, the only option has been an emergency dialysis, which most emergency physicians say is not practical in a life-threatening bleed.

Pradaxa Lawsuits: Multidistrict Litigation

At present, numerous lawsuits have already been filed by patients and/or their representatives, and the cases have been consolidated into a Multidistrict Litigation (MDL). Specifically, the Pradaxa MDL is currently pending before the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois. To date, the FDA has not recalled Pradaxa, and so it is still on the market, and being (dangerously) prescribed to patients.
